“Matilda. Conner. You may step forward,” Father commanded. “I trust everything is OK?” He stood at other side of the stone and crystalline chamber. Before I could answer, I heard a small scuffle from behind me.

“It is easy. Just step in. Common,” Harry said from the other side, before he popped in behind us.

“Whoa!” Scott yelled as he landed on his knees. “Ouf!” He yelled out. “Damn. I was expecting there to be a brief moment of free flying before the room loaded.”

“Curious,” Father muttered, walking up to the center of the casting circle. “You can’t be a Warlock. I don’t recognize your face,” Elymas said, as he gazed deeply at Scott with his judging eyes. Scott hustled his way to a standing position. “Conner, who is this young man you have brought before me? And why is he half naked?”

“This is Scott, a coworker of mine. He was attacked by the Witches.”

“A coworker? Oh please,” Matilda snorted to herself. “I mean, it is true, sir,” she said to Father. “Conner and I stopped the Witch from taking the kill.”

“And what were the two of you doing out of the manor? I gave both of you very simple instructions to follow. Very. Simple. Instructions. Yet you both failed me,” he said, giving Matilda and I a cautious glare. Scott didn’t say a word. Poor thing. He must be scared stiff of my father. He doesn’t even like meeting new clients, let alone a scary old man who could kill him in a heartbeat. I should have put in a bit more effort to make Scott presentable. I should have gone up to my room and dressed him up first. Harry nudged me out of my train of thought. Father was waiting for me to answer. It was now or never.

“Father, I had good reason to check on Scott. Scott…Scott is the mortal I told you about. The one I am seeing.”

“Scott is the what?” Father said. He almost choked.

“The mortal I am seeing. The one I have been dating.”

“This…this cannot be. How could I not have foreseen this?” he muttered. “Is this a joke? Or am I just delirious from sleep deprivation?”

“I am being dead serious Father. I…I am gay. Scott is my boyfriend. I care about him very much. And he is in more danger than what we first thought.”

“Gay? My own son,” he yelled. He turned towards Harry. “What about you? Did you know about this?”

“Conner told me about a month ago, Father.”

“And you Matilda?”

“Scott is the mortal Conner has been assigned by my father to assist. Father has seen the way they behave around each other, and confided in me as such.”

“So everyone knew. Everyone but me,” he muttered. “Why. Why did nobody tell me? Does the title Grand Warlock mean nothing to anyone?” Us three Warlock’s hanged our heads in shame. Then, to my surprise, I heard Scott speak up.

“Mr. Sorensen, sir, I know I haven’t said much and…”

“You dare speak to me?” Father roared, his eyes flaming.
